Heat Wave Shows!

I have to admit I was a little worried that this little heatwave that blanketed the country last weekend was going to put a damper my two shows I had planned (especially the outdoor one). Fortunately it somehow worked out in my favor. On Saturday, although it was 101 degrees in New York, I had one of my most successful shows to date at the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. There were definitely many vendors out there than my previous weekend selling at the market so I decided to chat up the veterans who came out and see how they felt about the heat.

One couple who sold vintage gems told me that their records told them that it was the same temperature exactly a year ago (that's pretty nifty to keep track of the temperature in your records!) and they sold the same amount they always sold. And then they wisely told me, "tourists don't like to me cooped up in their hotel rooms no matter how hot it is". Boy were they right. I've never heard so many languages. I made sales to people visiting from Japan, Germany, the UK, Australia, and so many more countries. It was amazing that people were willing to brave the heat. My husband's mom even surprised us with a visit as well as our cousin. I came prepared with 5 huge bottles of ice water and plenty of SPF but by the end of the day I was sure pooped. But at least round two the next day was indoors with AC! The Astoria Market went off great as well but it was a little bitter sweet since that will be my last time at that market this summer. I only have one more stint at the Hell's Kitchen Flea (Aug 6th) before I move back to DC!

Hell's Kitchen Flea Market Recap

This past Saturday I sold my jewelry at the famous Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. Named one of the Top Ten Shopping Streets in the World by National Geographic, this market is a true gem. The first time I visited this market was on a quick trip to visit some of my college friends a few summers ago. After a lovely brunch at an outdoor cafe near by we stumbled upon this market by accident and I've been intrigued ever since. Full of eclectic vendors that sell all sort of fun baubles like antique toys and furniture, vintage bag and clothes, one of a kind screen printing goods, jewelry and loads more it really feels like surfing Etsy only in 3D.

Being my first outdoor show in NYC I enlisted the help of my husband to help me. We rose at the crack of dawn and were able to fit my tent, table, displays, and jewels in cab and arrived a few minutes later in time for set up at 7am. It was so nice having the company all day. Sometimes the shows get lonely all by myself so it was nice having a buddy (not to mention the muscles!)

There were lots of highlights through out the day for me. The first being a customer visiting all the way from Australia recognized my goods. She had bought a necklace from my Etsy shop just a few months earlier for her sister. How cool?! I also had a lovely conversation with a woman from DC- who I found out works with one of my Nana co-workers (seriously it's a small world!) And a few friends who I haven't seen since my wedding (almost a year ago!) made a surprise visit. I love the friendly faces!

All the vendors, mostly seasoned veterans of the market, were all so kind and supportive of each other. I scored a super "fellow vendor" deal on two vintage leather coach bags from the woman across the way from me and the woman next to my gave me two vintage evening bags from the 70s for letting her customers use my mirror. Ok I officially have a bag addiction (ok, that's been going on for a while... heheehe) It just reminded me why I love doing the markets. Meeting people from all over the world and finding rare gems really make for a great way to spend your weekend.

At the end of the day, after we packed up in record time, my hubby turned to me in the cab and said "I have a new appreciation for what you do...that was hard work!" Wow, that was nice to hear. It's a lot of work but I enjoy it tremendously. And we had such a successful and fun day that we are coming back to the market this Saturday the 23rd. Astoria Market in Queens Recap

It's been a while since my last post so I'll catch all of you up! For those of you who don't know, I am living in New York City for the summer (eek! so exciting!) My husband got a summer law position here so I decided what better time to come and live in my dream city, where most of my friends already reside. Since arriving, I've been spending most of my time working for the branding company that I've freelanced with for the past 4 years. They are headquartered here so it really worked out perfectly. I've also been trying to fit in a few arts and craft shows here and there and I actually did my first market in the city this past Sunday. After a lovely weekend of celebrating my birthday with friends by galavanting through the city and playing on Fire Island I was all relaxed for The Astoria Market.

I was excited for this market for a few reasons:

1) The market is based out the famous Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens (yes, that's right beer garden....I mean what would go better with arts and crafts, really?)

2) I had never been to Queens...and I had heard many great things about the neighborhood. My friends who live here even gave my hubby and I a short tour and took us out to sample the famous neighborhood cuisine after the show.

3) I had made a lot of new designs I was super psyched to share with people!

4) I could take public transporation there! I was able to pack everything I needed for the show and carry it on the subway- seriously couldn't have been easier.

It turned out to be a really great show and I would definitively do it again. Thanks to all the friends who stopped by- I always love to see a friendly face. Spring Thing and Handmade Mart

Crawfish Boil!

These past few weeks have been pretty crazy for my household. I've been busy preparing for two huge craft shows happening this weekend (blog posts about these fun fairs coming soon!) and my husband just wrapped up his law school finals. I was able to take a few days off to visit my Alma Mater Smith College for my five year college reunion last weekend (blog post coming about this too!) and then finally take a breather with my husband this week in Kiawah, South Carolina. We decided to come down to his family's beach house here to see his grandparents, aunt, uncle, family friend, and most importantly his mom who is moving to Iraq to work with a non profit in just a few short weeks.

I decided this was the perfect opportunity to share some of my cajun family traditions with my new family, so we put together a crawfish boil. Being the first one I put on with out my family or friends I had to make a few calls to them to confirm a few things but it couldn't have gone better. Here are a few pics of the night. It felt great introducing them to such an important tradition to me. If you have never gone to a crawfish boil you are missing out. It brought the family together and everyone couldn't have had more fun learning how to eat those little buggers! I can't wait to host my next!

Fenton Street Market Grand Opening!

The GRAND OPENING of the Fenton Street Market this year is TOMORROW- SATURDAY, APRIL 30th from 9am – 3pm. It's expected to be a gorgeous day out (sunny and in the 60s!) and with the 100 vendors you are bound to find some interesting handmade crafts! So bring your wallet and your walking shoes! O and it's the perfect place to find that mother's day gift!

This is my first year as a vendor and I can't wait. It sounds like such an amazing market and I'm so proud to have a booth! I'll have tone of new designs including lots of rings, necklaces, and earrings with vintage flair!

Trunk Show THIS Thursday at Nana

Be sure to stop by after work this Thursday from 5-7p at DC's lovely Nana where I will have my entire collection available. I always love having trunk shows at Nana, a place I consider my second home (or second closet!) And if you haven't checked out their new space in Mount Pleasant you are missing out. It's gorgeous and there is lots to do around the neighborhood including getting 'ritas Haydee's, getting your nails did, heading to Past Tense Yoga Studio to get your OM on, and satisfying that sweet tooth at Heller's Bakery (open since 1922!)

I've been busy the past few weeks creating loads of new designs that no one has seen! Lots of chandelier crystals turned into statement necklaces, vintage cabochons turned into Springy studs and rings, and pocket watches turned into long necklaces. I'm bringing some cool drinks and yummy baked goods. Hope to see you there! Bring all your girlfriends and make a night of it!

Adam's Morgan Pop Up Shop

Just a quick note to say thanks to all who worked and attended the Adam's Morgan Pop Up shop this past month! This eclectic temporary retail shop featured tons of great local artisans from jewelers to soap makers to clothing designers. It was so fun being included with such great crafters. If you hear of any other pop up shops popping up in the DC area give me a shout out! I'm officially in love with the idea!

Mount Pleasant Temporium

It's official. I love working in small neighborhood store. I think I went into a little bit of a withdraw when the local woman's clothing shop where I work part time and sell my jewelry, Nana closed it's U street location for a few months with plans to reopen in Mount Pleasant this March. Luckily I've been able to be a part of a really cool project in the new space- The Mount Pleasant Temporium. What is that you ask? Well, it's a temporary, pop-up retailer on Mt. Pleasant St. open for for 24 consecutive days. The project features handmade goods for sale from 34 local, independent crafters and artists (including me!). I'm there 6 days a week managing the store and ringing up sales. And honestly I love being in the shop nearly everyday of the week. It's been such a fun process meeting all the local artists, helping actually set up the shop, and talking to all the excited patrons who stroll in. It's been a tremendous success so far and I've been so lucky to work with such a great team- most especially the Nana team, Mount Pleasant Main Street, and Hello Craft.

Country in the City

A self-proclaimed city girl, sometimes I just can't help but let my Texan country roots seep out. "Wait, did you just say 'y'all'?", I often hear new acquaintances say to me. O lord if you think that is bad don't dare catch me on the phone with my most country of my Texan friends, Kelly. For some reason the southern drawl just manifests itself instantaneously the moment I get to chatting with her.

Though you'd never guess it, hearing my friends back home get super excited about the upcoming Rodeo makes me feel a little melancholy. So this rainy day, I decided to embrace my country soul in the city and breakout the denim skirt and western blouse. I've often been told I have a bohemian California style but today it was all about mixing the country with the city. I love the mix of traditional western fabrics and other textiles like a funky shrunken gray vest and long gold necklace I made. You'll be seeing a lot more of this modern-urban-southwestern like style in my newest jewelry collection; I've been busy working with turquoise and other western inspirations all month long. Winter/Spring Shows

Hate buying stuff online because you can't really see what you're buying? I totally understand the need to touch, feel, and try on. That's part of the reason I choose to participate in craft shows and fairs plus I just loooove getting to meet customers in person. Here's a list of events I'll be vending at this Winter/Spring season in the DC area that I'd love for you to attend (trying on and touching the jewels is highly encouraged!):

Swap Day Success

I told you all about National Swap Day in my last post and wanted to share a few pictures of the fabulous event I volunteered at here in DC this past weekend.

From 9-11 in the morning women stopped by to drop of clothes they wanted to swap and and one of my jobs was to help sort through it all. This pile got about 10 times larger! But we got through it all, hanging up hundred and hundreds of garments on racks, and organizing shoes and accessories.

When we finished sorting and organizing we opened up the doors and a flood of women came through. Apparently there was a line around the block to get in! I had a fun time moving through the crowd, picking up empty hangers, and getting giddy when I heard girls get excited about a new find.

I came home with quite a loot- vintage fur coat, Betsy Johnson belt, a Longchamp purse, brand new boots and heels, and a dozen dresses/tops. Such fun!

It was such a fabulous event and I had a great time working with all the lovely organizers and volunteers! A fellow swapper and Lanyapi/Nana customer Lily, snapped this picture of us!

Celebrate National Swap Day!

It's no secret that I love clothes. But a girl like me ain't trying to break the bank, while looking fly. I learned quickly from my frugalista mother that you can still put together a great outfit if your think smart. As a result I am addicted to sales, vintage, and expanding my wardrobe by sharing with my friends. I'm always trying to get my girl friends to have swap parties (where everyone brings clothing items they no longer wear and gets to go home with new items from friends) and recently I hosted one for my local college alum group. So when I heard about the first National Swap Day coming up this Saturday and that there would be an event at the new location of Nana- I signed up to be a volunteer immediately.

But wait? When did swapping blow up? The first time I heard about it on a big scale like this was when participating as a vendor at a local arts market in Boston a few years ago. Amy Chase from Punky Style and Melissa Massello from Shoestring Magazine, who want to revive the age-old clothing swap put on an event where tons of people got to rummage through clothing in search of a new outfit. Since then they have been putting on successful events all over the country making swapping cool again.

I'm back from a whirl wind of travel during the holidays. My hubby and I finally got to go on our ridiculously romantic honeymoon to BORA BORA (!) and we visited family and friends in Whistler, Canada for an amazing ski adventure (Could I be more lucky? Seriously.). I'm excited to share pics from these journeys soon but first I wanted to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR and send lots of positive vibes your way to make this year better than the last.

I have so many things to look forward to this year: My first full year being married to my amazing husband. My 5 year college reunion. More travelin'. New work projects and so much more! I love asking people what their new year's resolutions are. Some people don't believe in them and some people like me have a long, looooong list. The thing I am most excited for this year is growing my jewelry business. I've got lots of surprises in store (a fancy website, lots of exciting shows, and brand spanking new designs... just to name a few). Stay tuned and join me on my road to making 2011 a fantastic year! Lanyapi's Holiday Gift Guide Series:Beauty Fanatic

The third installment of Lanyapi's Holiday Gift Guide Series is dedicated to the beauty fanatic. As a young girl growing up with 4 brothers and no sisters let me tell you I gravitated to all things beauty. Instead of hand me down eye shadows and dresses I literally got hand me down Bugle Boy shorts but I made it work like I always do. Here are a few gifts ideas that any sister would love to get from their testosterone filled brother.

1) Wave Hair Crimper. Always wondered how Taylor's swift gets those awesome waves in her hair? She uses a wave crimper. I picked one up at Sephora for only $20 and I love it! Great way to jazz up your hair for all those holiday parties.

2) Elizabeth W Bath Pouches. I bought some of these little pouches to give to my mom and mother and law for Christmas (opps I hope they don't read this post!!). 3) Nail Polish. Inexpensive and great stocking stuffer. My signature hues of the season are taupe, turquoise and Christmas red!

5) Make-Up. Etsy has tons of great vegan and mineral makeup that is great for your skin. Pick out a few shimmery eve shadows and your gift shopping is complete!

6) Perfume jewelry. I love carrying around perfume with me in interesting ways. I have a ring that opens up to reveal solid perfume and I love this vintage strawberry perfume bottle necklace in my shop. Just fill it with a girl's favorite perfume and your sure to be a winner!

Lanyapi’s second Holiday gift guide is for the cooking fanatic. My hubby and I love to cook and have received so many great kitchen gifts for our recent wedding. We are Top Chef addicts and have been known to own a few too many geeky kitchen tools so I wanted to share with you a few gift ideas for the chef in your life.

1) Cheese Knife. I first saw a version of this slicer at a friend’s house and was immediately attracted to how perfect it cut slices of cheese. My dad would love this and you can find them at Target for less than $10!

7) Cooking Classes. I bought my hubby cooking classes a few years ago and he loved it. He got to learn how to pair flavors really well and still uses the tools he learned from those classes today! Great for all skill levels.

I always get stumped by what to get my friends and family by the time the holidays roll around, so this year I am creating a series of themed holiday gift guides to inspire me. My hubby is in the middle of law school final exams so lately it's been hard for him to get to yoga class. He's taken to meditating at home when he finds a time that works for him. What's Day of the Dead? Or El Día de los Muertos as it is said in Spanish? It is a Mexican celebration of deceased ancestors. Despite the obvious morbid subject matter, this holiday is actually celebrated in joyful spirits because it's all about celebrating and honoring the lives of those who have passed, rather than fearing evil spirits. 10 Ways to Pump up your Fall Wardrobe without Spending a Dime!

I'm so excited to break out my fall wardrobe but just like all girls sometimes I look in my closet and think I have nothing to wear. Instead of going out to the mall and dropping some cash on a new outfit create some new looks with what you have at home. Here are a few ideas.

1) Add tights and a cardigan to a summer dress. I bought lots of cute vintage dresses on my travels this summer and only got to wear them once or twice before the weather got chilly. Add some colorful tights, boots, and a little sweater and you're good to go. Add a jean jacket or a shrunken leather jacket for some extra warmth.

2) Layer it up. Have a favorite tank but don't know how to incorporate the sleeveless-ness in to you fall wardrobe? Put it over a long sleeve shirt or thin turtle neck and your good to go!

3) Have a clothing swap with your girl friends. Have a few gal pals over to your house for a little girl time. Have each of them bring clothing, purses, and jewelry they don't use and then have a little party where you go "shopping" for new threads.

4) Learn a new hairdo. Search the internet for easy how to videos on new ways to play up your hair. Whether it's a cool side braid or chic new bun doing your hair in a different style give you a whole new look no matter what you're wearing.

5) Raid your boyfriend's/husband's/brother's/dad's/best guy friend's closet. I believe that all women should incorporate men's pieces into their wardrobe (but maaaybe that's just because I grew up with 4 brothers and no sisters). It's such a chic look. Roll up the sleeves of a crisp button down shirt and tuck it into a pencil skirt, wear a cool tie as a belt or a head band, or just layer an oversized blazer over skinny jeans.

6) Change up your makeup colors. Put away your bronzer and opt to play up your eyes instead with that eye liner and eye shadow you forgot about in the bottom on your makeup bag. A smoky eye looks good on almost everyone.

7) Pair lots and lots of jewelry together. Normally wear one bracelet? Why not pair 5 together. Or wear a short necklace and pair it with a longer statement piece. Sometimes jewelry gets lost in all the layers of clothing so wear a little bit more to stand out.

8) Keep on wearing those shorts. Think just because summer is over you can't wear your favorite shorts anymore? Jean shorts, high waisted shorts, and tailored shorts all look great over a pair of tights. Go for a casual look by pairing it with booties or glam it up at night with heels.

9) Add some embellishment. Get out your needle and thread and find your stash of buttons and other craft baubles. Change all the buttons on a sweater and it goes from drap to fab. Add a feather, ribbon, or crystals to your favorite pair of flats and voila you automatically look more chic!

10) Make your own scarf/necklace from old t-shirts. Instead of throwing out those old concert tees making something new. Here is a cool and easy version.

The Characters of Norman Rockwell

It's a rainy day here in DC. Perfect for curling up on the couch and watching old movies or hitting up one of the free museums here in DC. The other day my younger brother and I headed over to see George Lucas' and Steven Spielberg's collection of Norman Rockwell's paintings at the Smithsonian American Museum of Art. His paintings always tell a story and each person is a fully developed character (just like in the movies!) Here are some of my favorites.

The Flirts. I love this one! The man is pulling off petals of a daisy!

Some critics said that Rockwell was too old fashioned with his subject matter. Many believe this was a self portrait of him looking at more radical work of the time.

Upon seeing this one my brother says, "I've been there!"

New Orleans...a little something extra

Sometimes, like all daughters I suppose, I wonder how my parents got their little (at times embarrassing but lovable) quirks. Hardly ever abashed, always adventurous and ever so friendly my parents are unlike any parents I know from my hometown in Texas. I found out on my latest trip to their hometown, New Orleans where it all comes from. Sure, New Orleans is known for their free spirited partiers and laid back attitude but the people who live there year around must be of the more serious type.

And that's where you'd be wrong.

People from New Orleans will not hesitate to stop you on the street to comment on your jacket or ask you the time (or on Mardi Gras weekend, what day it is) and from that first encounter you'll find out their name, what street they live on, figure out you shared a teacher in grade school, and probably end up going to get a drink with them.

My parents decided to take my new husband and I on a trip to New Orleans as a wedding gift and that's where I saw my parents in a new light (my husbands eyes) and I realized New Orleans is part of their personality, part of their soul and always will be. In New Orleans, my parents aren't embarrassing, loud, or crazy, rather their just quite normal. One of the locals. They took us down memory lane, showing us the old cemetery where both of them have family members, showed us the houses they grew up in, took us to the Southern Decadence (Gay Mardi Gras) Parades (where they quickly made friends), and even took us to the infamous Pat O'Brien's (where my mom and her girlfriends went for a celebratory drink after finishing law school and where high school students from my dad's high school still go to listen to the live pianist). New Orleans isn't just a place they once lived, but rather what shaped them to become the people they are today.

I had a great time eating all the sinful food (mmmm beignets), shopping in the oldest market in the US, and just walking around the french quarter with my hubby and parents. I even had a shop keeper use the word "lagniappe" with me when I was buying old french chandelier crystals from the 1850s! It's the word I used to name my jewelry business (Lanyapi) that means "a little something extra". And that's the spirit that sums up New Orleans for me...where people give you a little something extra!

Fall...here I come!

It's been a scorching hot summer here in DC so I am especially looking forward to fall this year. Here are a few of my favorite things for the season:

--> Having lived in sandals all summer I'm excited for new footwear. I love to keep my toes warms in my Minnetonkas!

--> Cooler weather means perfect time to work out outdoors and not pass out from the heat. I'm training for my first sprint triathlon that takes place in two weeks. Perfect timing.

--> Seasonal veggies. I'm a fan of the hearty veggies and I love trying new recipes. I'm a little obsessed with caramelized brussel sprouts , parsnips, and kale chips at the moment!

-->Long necklaces. I love jazzing up my sweaters with a luscious long necklace. My new favorite is this Indian inspired one now available in my shop!

-->Staying in bed just a little bit longer in the morning to enjoy your warm bed!

-->Tights and leggings! And I love them with a twist. Currently I'm living in a pair with a cute gold zipper embellishment but I love lace ones too! Pair 'em with sexy boot or colorful flat and you are ready to go! This etsy artist has some great ones!

-->Camping. I absolutely get giddy when I think about camping in the fall. No mosquitoes, perfect hiking weather, and camp fires. Seriously there is nothing better. 'Bout to go plan my next trip! Enjoy your fall!

10 things to pack on your next trip

Weather it's a camping trip for the weekend, a Caribbean beach getaway, or a touristy trip I love to travel. Smart packing is important. Here are my top 10 things you must pack on your next trip to make your travel more enjoyable.

1) Sleep mask- even if you don't normal use one you'll be happy to have it when your on a plane or staying in your friend's sunny room with no blinds. I love Bucky's collection.
2) Running shoes- I love exploring places with an early morning run when the city is just starting to rise.
3) Journal- I am always inspired by what I see, taste, and experience when I travel so I carry around a tiny journal to write down all my ideas, quotes I see, and more.
4) Foldable reusable bag- these are useful when you go a little overboard with your shopping and barely take up any room in your luggage. If you carry it in your purse then you don't have to get any plastic bags purchasing souvenirs. I love this one.
5) A good read- One of my favorite parts of traveling is catching up on my reading. Be sure to pack a book. You'll be glad you have it when you have any travel delays.
6) Your favorite lotion- Your skin can get dry when on flights so having a little travel size of your favorite lotion is nice. Having a great smelling lotion with you can help you moisturize, remind you of home, and double as perfume.
7) A long scarf- A scarf can jazz up an outfit, keep you warm on those chilly nights, and even double as a beach towel. So useful. I love this skull printed one.
8) Jewelry- Jewelry is the key to packing light. Pack neutral clothes that can be mixed and matched and bring a few key jewelry pieces to pump up your outfit for night or to give an outfit a whole new vibe. I love long necklaces and cocktail rings.
9) Comfy but cute walking shoes- You don't have to sacrifice style for comfort these days. Be sure to bring a pair of cute flats or sandals that can be used for day and night. Delicate Sole even roll up to save you even more room in your suitcase.

Visiting the Etsy Offices

I love traveling to New York to visit my girlfriends. I have quite a few Smithie friends who have made a home in the city of lights so when ever I visit I always have wonderful company. Christian and I decided to take a weekend trip to visit our friends, shop, and I also wanted to visit the Etsy offices. I was itching to see where all the admin I correspond with work and see them in their environment. So I coordinated a visit with Neha, a fellow Smithie, of Waverley Kitchens (an amazing Indian spice blend shop on etsy) and my BFF :-)

Located in the hip neighborhood of Dumbo in Brooklyn it truly is a picturesque place to work. Right under the Brooklyn Bridge and on the same block as super hip bars and boutiques I can imagine it's a great area to live.

When we got to the loft like offices we walked right in (no stuffy door man needed) and headed up to the Etsy suite where we met with Sarah our lovely tour guide. She showed us around their new office space which felt more like a playground, than a place of employment. Admin were doing everything from playing ping pong in the main social space, breaking out the wine (it was a Friday afternoon!), laying on couches in a quite room filled with incredible retro vintage furniture and chasing their dogs around the compound.

Visually Etsy is quicky and wacky, just like you'd expect. And pretty much everything is handmade. They are currently getting rid of all their bland Ikea furniture and buying handmade desks from Etsy sellers. Even their humongous picnic table in the dining area is handmade.

Splayed around all over the office are items sellers have sent. Chandeliers made of antlers, quilts from the Etsy Quilt team, and larger than life whimsical lamps made from mango tree roots.

I especially loved seeing the Etsy labs and the craft room, where every Monday night they offer a free Craft Night. Sewing machines, a silk screening machine, and other crafting tools fill the room. It's a crafter's dream!

It was also really intriguing learning about Etsy's up and coming projects. One we learned about is that they will be offering customer service via phone for the very first time. They are currently converting 3 closets into phone rooms and are having artist come in a completely transform them into fantasy rooms. My favorite one will feature hundreds of doors paining all over the walls.

We also learned that Etsy will have a new feature where they will recommend items for you based on your favorites. I am totally excited for this but they are still trying to work out all the kinks, so I'll have to wait.

Putting a face to all the admin who have featured me over my time at Etsy was such a delight. Seeing them working away on their Macs and their colorful desks was so fun. And literally these people are the friendliest folk you'll ever meet. They even gave us gift bags filled with Etsy goodies- how sweet!

I left wanted a job application and knowing that Etsy is such a wonderful community to be a part of. Next trip I'll have to extend my trip so I can go to Craft Night!

It's funny because I actually never knew the whole song. I always just heard the Chorus. I especially love the last part! So cute! I want to try and incorporate the theme of a bicycle built for two in my wedding. I recently made these adorable tandem bike necklace for myself and offer it in my etsy shop here.

Functional Jewelry

My newest obsession is functional jewelry. I love adorning people with baubles that are unique and give them character and personality but what better than adding functionality to the list? Recently I've created pieces in my shop that not only are beautiful works of art but are truly useful.

The first was inspired by Mad Men, my favorite show about adverting in the 60's. I am infatuated with the style on that series and have always especially loved Joan, the sultry secretary who is rarely seen without her famous pen necklace. I was able to find the most brilliant pens that could be made into necklaces. Handcrafted with the utmost care and attention they are now available as necklaces in three types of wood in my shop- maple, walnut, and Padauk (a most beautiful african wood). I imagine women wearing these to work to take notes or for those constantly on the go working parties and meetings.

The second piece is all about touch ups. Perfume touch ups that is. Have you ever been out all night and wish you could just dab a little perfume on to freshen up? Well with my perfume locket now you can. The vintage locket features the most beautiful basket weave design (reminds me of an apple pie!) and has actually Avon perfume in it! The scent is fresh and sexy and I love the idea of carrying it around you neck.

Lastly my newest piece of all is a necklace made out of a real harmonica! This is the perfect piece for the music lover in your life. The mini harmonica is crafted out of metal and can play a complete octave! This adds a little rock and roll to your style and you'll always be able to jazz the night up!

I love that all these pieces have vintage components or are vintage inspired. It makes something old completely beautiful and still useful today. I played with things such as real working lighters, glass bottles, and more and have just had the best time figuring out useful things to use jewelry for. Traveling to Peru, Mexico, and Spain also made me realize how much English has affected native Spanish speakers. So many English words make their way into every language and I think it is so fascinating. Two of my favorite books about the topic include:

So, how's the job hunt going?

My fiance and I have recently become obsessed with the show, "How I Met Your Mother"...we are a little late on the band wagon so we have been renting the DVDs to catch up and cannot get enough of this hilarious sitcom. The other night we watched a season 4 episode that really hit close to home for me. Robin is unemployed (like me) and currently apartment-less and gets that ever so pleasant question everyone gets only o a few thousand times when searching for a new job or home. Here's how it went down on HIMYM:

Marshall Eriksen: So, how's the job hunt going?
Robin Scherbatsky: Didn't you hear? I got a job at CNN this morning. And I moved to a penthouse made of gold overlooking Central Park. Get your head out of your ass, Marshall.

I think I literally fell off the couch when I heard this. Could I respond to people like this when they ask me about the job hunt? Oo that would be classic. A good friend of mine, who he himself got laid off earlier this year and whose mother also recently got laid off from a high powered exec position told me that he heard the average time it is taking people to find a job right now is 9-12 months. 9-12 months. That's insane but with the state of the economy right now I believe it. Not only is it just plain hard to find a job that is a good fit for you (heck you spend more time at your job that you do at your home you want it to be a pleasant place) but it's just so incredibly difficult to get a call back from the companies you don't even want to work for. Am I crazy for quitting a job I loved in Boston to move to DC to be with my fiance? I hope not. I don't think I would be happy working in a job I like but not seeing my fiance everyday. It's a sacrifice I made and there will be lots of jobs in my life....but I'll only have one true love like this. So that being said I better get to cracking the Rolodex and making some networking calls. Wish me luck...

Taking a dive in...

O well hello there friend-

Instead of talking about the normal first blog worries about how I am new to this and I don't know what I am doing (both true facts)...I am going to skip all that and take a dive right in and hope I can keep afloat in this crazy world of blogging. I want a forum, not only to talk about my jewelry designs, but to share all sorts of things floating around in that crazy little head of mine. I hope to keep you tantalized with stories about travel, art, fashion, design, food, and more.

I'll start my first blog post and tell you a little about myself...

Born and raised in Houston, Texas I am the sole girl in my family surrounded by two older brothers and two younger brothers. I planned my escape from Texas at quite a young age and decided to graduate high school a year early and head to the liberal east coast as fast as I could. It's quite fitting that I decided to go to an all women's college, perhaps to get away from my testosterone filled house-hold (hehehe). I truly had the most incredible experience. At Smith College I studied Spanish language and literature as well as Studio art. It's there where I had wonderful opportunities studying in Peru and Barcelona and making the most wonderful friends. At school, I met my now fiance, Christian who went to Amherst College to study Economics. He is the love of my life, my soulmate, and I don't know what I would do without him. After graduation we moved to Chicago for our very first 9 to 5 jobs. Those were the days when I sold insurance to United Methodist churches...and if you knew me you'd know that was the most ill fitting job for me. After two years I finally found a job in the industry I knew I wanted to be in- advertising...only thing was the job was in Boston. So off we went on the second stop on my post college tour- Bean Town. At Hill Holliday I worked as a media planner on Dunkin Donuts and couldn't be more happy to find the industry I knew I was made for. Then Christian went ahead and got himself accepted to one of the best law school in the country. So barely after a year in Boston we made a move down south to DC for Christian to attend Georgetown Law. Christian proposed this May in Paris of all places (seriously how perfect can you get) and we are having a fabulous time planning our wedding and can't wait to tie the knot. So here I am. I'm in my third city after just three and a half years since I left Smith, looking for a new job, and to be honest I should be more scared than I am but I am more excited than ever. I'm finally able to throw myself into my jewelry making and really take the time to find a job that is perfect for me. So here I go...I am starting yet another adventure in another city and I am just going to do all that I know I can do in this situation and just dive right in...
